From a number to something you can hold

Pixels have a count.
Prints have a size.

A pixel is a piece of an image, not a fixed physical measurement. To turn pixel dimensions into inches, you need to decide how many pixels to place in each inch. That number is the image’s resolution, measured in pixels per inch (PPI).

For each dimension, divide the pixel count by PPI. An image that is 3,000 pixels wide becomes 10 inches wide at 300 PPI, or 20 inches wide at 150 PPI. The image has not gained or lost pixels; you are changing how closely they are packed on the print.

Choose centimeters or millimeters when your print specifications use metric units. One inch is exactly 2.54 centimeters or 25.4 millimeters. The calculator keeps precision internally and rounds the displayed result for readability.

Start with the actual pixels

Enter the image width and height, or choose a PNG, JPEG or WebP to read its dimensions on your device. A file’s pixel dimensions tell you what you have to work with. The converter uses the PPI you select; it does not assume a file’s saved resolution is the resolution you want to print.

Choose a useful resolution

300 PPI is a common starting target for photographs viewed up close, but it is not a promise of quality. Image sharpness, the printer, paper and viewing distance all matter. Large posters viewed from farther away can have different requirements. Follow your print provider’s guidance.

Check the shape as well as size

A 3:2 photograph does not fill a 5:4 frame without cropping. Plan a print shows both approaches: fill the page and trim the edges, or preserve the complete image with borders. Its available PPI calculation uses the pixels that remain after the chosen fit.

A few things worth getting right

Are PPI and DPI the same thing?

No. Image PPI describes pixels per inch of the image. Printer DPI describes the printer’s dots per inch. A printer may use several ink dots to represent a pixel. This calculator uses image PPI, even when a print brief casually calls it DPI.

Why do some converters say one inch always equals 96 pixels?

That is the defined relationship between CSS units: 1 CSS inch equals 96 CSS pixels. It is useful for web layout. It is not a universal relationship between an image’s pixels and its printed size, and it does not establish the physical size of a screen. Choose the context that matches your task.

Will increasing PPI improve an image?

Changing the PPI setting alone changes the physical size, not the source detail. Resampling adds or removes pixels. The fitted PNG exporter resamples to the dimensions you request and tells you when the export asks for more pixels than the source provides; upscaling cannot recover detail that was never captured.

How does the PNG download work?

Choose an image, open Plan a print, select paper size and fit, then download. The image is processed locally, cropped centrally or placed on a white background, and exported as a PNG with the selected PPI metadata. Export is limited to 16 million pixels and 10,000 pixels per edge to keep memory use reasonable. Check the exported file and disable unwanted scaling in the print dialog.

Can I convert a single width?

Yes. Leave height blank. You will still get the width in inches, centimeters and millimeters. Two dimensions are required for aspect-ratio locking, megapixels and print-fitting calculations.

Are my images uploaded or stored?

No. Image reading and processing happen in your browser. This app does not upload your selected files, run advertising scripts, or send your calculation inputs to an analytics service. If you enable remembered preferences, only your unit and PPI choices are saved in this browser. The hosting service still processes ordinary network requests needed to deliver the website.
